A Self-Sustaining Bavarian Childhood

In the blooming garden of his childhood home. Klaus, age 8, with his father Fritz and his younger brother Heinrich.

A Self-Sustaining Bavarian Childhood

Klaus grew up in the mountains near Oberstaufen on a farm where his family raised animals, vegtables and crops. Nothing went unused; from a very young age Klaus learned the value of making use of the resources the farm generated; whether it was cow manure or urine to the body heat the animals generated during the winter months: the environmental circle was complete - reuse, regenerate, renew. When the circle was broken – crop yields and animal husbandry suffered.
