Aspen – Skitraum in the Rocky Mountains

by Jessica Martin / Oliver Koytek

In the north of Colorado is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world: Aspen. Famous for its "champagne snow", 300 sunny days a year and an exceptionally high percentage of celebrities.

In January 2018, Paris Hilton got engaged to Chris Zylka in Aspen. Hollywood legends Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas are neighbors of talk show queen Oprah Winfrey, US billionaire Leslie Wexner, and Saudi prince Bandar.  Every year, during the ski season, the old mining town in the Rocky Mountains becomes the backdrop for the show of the rich and famous - and a lot of German is spoken about.

One of the most famous inhabitants of Aspen is a German: Klaus Obermeyer. The now 98-year-old was there when Aspen from sleepy village was a celebrity hotspot. Obermeyer was one of the first ski instructors in the 40s and already taught skiing to Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. When his students almost froze to death in these badly insulated jackets, he quickly made the first ski anorak in the world out of a down comforter - the birth of "Sport Obermeyer". To this day, he works in his company every day when he is not on the slopes.
